THE HISTORY OF THE IIEC

The history of the Insurance Institute goes back to 1898, when it was first established in Cape Town. Subsequent development saw further institutes develop in all the main cities and towns in South Africa, all affiliated to the Chartered Insurance Institute in London. The focus was the provision of insurance technical learning material – for distance learning and testing by examination. In 1966 the local institutes voted to form a central South Africa body and the Insurance Institute of South Africa was formed as an affiliate of the CII, with the local institutes in turn becoming affiliates of the IISA.
